Loneliness at Christmas: Small Gestures Can Make a Big Difference

Christmas is perhaps the time of year when contrasts feel the strongest. While some experience warmth and togetherness, others feel loneliness more intensely than ever.
I often think about how important it is to notice those who are alone at Christmas. Many older adults have no one to celebrate with. Others have family far away or struggle with mental health challenges that make it hard to participate.
According to the Healthy Aging Poll, one in three adults over 50 report feeling lonely during the year—and at Christmas, that number rises. Loneliness in later life is linked to an increased risk of depression, heart disease, and dementia.
But we can all make a difference. Small actions create a big impact:
📞 A phone call can be the best Christmas gift.
🍪 Deliver a small meal or some cookies to a neighbor.
🎄 Invite someone to a simple holiday activity, like seeing the city lights.
💌 Write a card or a message, words can warm more than we realize.
Christmas is a perfect time to remind ourselves that no one should feel forgotten. Maybe you can be the one who makes a difference for someone this year.
